The new GR Supra remains true to the legacy of past Supra generations and the Toyota icon 2000GT. Fans can look forward to an inspiring mix of agility and handling precision. This owes the new edition of the sports car of the combination of short wheelbase, wide track, low weight, low center of gravity and high-strength body.
The finishing touches on agility, stability and handling were provided by the racing pros of Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR). They tested the GR Supra especially on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and on the surrounding streets. Toyota President Akio Toyoda gave the go-ahead for the final test at the Nürburgring in his capacity as "champion driver".
The first deliveries of the new GR Supra to customers are scheduled for late summer 2019 . Toyota offers the vehicle with an equipment package as well as an exclusive edition at the market launch. The prices start at 62,900 euros .
Sports car design in its purest form
Already last year we were able to test drive the new Toyota Supra A90 still in his camouflage on the racetrack and got a fascinating impression of the agility of the new model. Of course, as a German Toyota Supra Community , we have been able to publish some technical details and graphics in our article exclusively and in advance. Go to Article
Even at first glance, it is clear how strongly the new Toyota GR Supra is anchored in the brand's sports car tradition. The long bonnet and compact body cite the 2000GT, while the front and rear - especially the muscular rear wings and domed spoiler - reveal the influence of the fourth generation Supra.
The design theme "Condensed Extreme" of the new GR Supra was first seen in the same spot five years ago, when Toyota in Detroit showed the concept vehicle FT-1. In the now-presented production version, the theme of condensed extremes is particularly evident in the packaging of the vehicle: the short wheelbase with large wheels and wide track, the tightly cut two-seater cabin and the long bonnet in a compact body promise exciting dynamics. Quotes from the Toyota sports car history are not a stylish end in itself, but fulfill important functions - such as the "double-bubble" roof, which reduces the frontal area of the vehicle and thus the air resistance, without restricting the headroom in the interior.
The front design is inspired by the fourth generation of the Supra, but looks even more expressive. The flat posture is emphasized by a striking grill flanked by two large air intakes; these in turn are indispensable for cooling the engine. The characteristic headlamps, which are more reminiscent of the nose, are equipped with six-lens LED units, including those for turn signals and daytime running lights.
In the side view, the low bonnet forms a dynamic line that stretches to the rear. While the nose squats very flat above the ground, the rear end of the hood is almost at the same height as the rear spoiler. Black pillars and character lines emphasize the tight and compact appearance of the rear-tilted passenger compartment. Lightweight and high-strength forged 19-inch alloy wheels with black and polished spokes are standard in Europe.
At the rear, the bow-shaped spoiler prevents unwanted lift, while the trapezoidal shape of the bumper gives the impression of downward movement and to the wheels. The taillights have a simple inner ring, the fog tail lights and reversing lights are placed as LED dots in the middle of the lower bumper.
Cockpit concept
The cockpit combines classic GT elements with state-of-the-art functionality. Inspired by a single-seater race car, it's designed to help the driver focus on driving. The flat and narrow instrument panel provides the widest possible field of vision forward, while the main controls are grouped so that they can be operated quickly and easily.
Head-up display, instruments, paddles and the additional control buttons on the handy three-spoke leather steering wheel allow for easy and distraction-free control of the sports car. The steering wheel reveals the 8.8-inch, high-resolution driver's display - with a 3D tachometer and shift point display in the center, a digital speedometer on the left and infotainment and navigation instructions on the right.
The asymmetric center console forms the border between the close-fitting driver area and the slightly more open zone for the passenger, whose knees are protected by the driver's special padding on the center console and doors. In the middle of the console sits a 8.8-inch multimedia display with touchscreen function, which can also be controlled by a rotary switch. The trunk is big enough for the luggage of two weekenders. With a removable cover, the capacity can be further increased; then a golf bag or personal gear will fit into the luggage compartment for a day on the racetrack.
The racing-inspired seats with integrated headrests provide the best everyday comfort and excellent support - especially when used on the circuit. Cushions on the sides and on the backrest keep the body in the best possible position. The covers are leather and a combination of leather with perforated Alcantara to choose from.
The eight-speed automatic transmission is characterized by extremely fast change of gear steps and a short gear ratio in the lower gears. The driver can make the gear changes themselves via the steering wheel shift paddles and adjust the shift behavior with the help of the driving modes Normal and Sport to his personal preferences; engine sound and response as well as damper, steering and differential settings can be adjusted in this way. Acceleration from zero to 100 km / h in just 4.3 seconds succeeds with Launch Control, which ensures maximum traction when starting up quickly.
Active differential
The Toyota GR Supra is equipped with an active differential in Europe that quickly distributes power between the wheels during acceleration and deceleration - from zero to 100 percent. It takes into account a variety of factors including steering wheel position, accelerator and brake pedal movements, engine speed and yaw rate. The differential increases the stability of the vehicle in the border area - an effect that is as noticeable when braking and steering in a curve as when accelerating out.
In perfect balance
When the Toyota developers defined the dimensions for the new GR Supra, the agility and handling characteristics were the decisive factors. Starting point was the "golden ratio" of 1.55 between wheelbase and track: This guarantees the ideal balance of maneuverability and stability.
In the development, the highest demands were made on the handling performance - that these were finally achieved, ensured by the development program led by Toyota Gazoo Racing, which included extensive driving tests on a variety of different routes. The high structural stiffness that surpasses even the super sports car Lexus LFA, a center of gravity that is even lower than the Toyota GT86, and the perfect weight distribution of 50:50 between front and rear axles were basic requirements to reach the demanding dynamic goals. But courageous decisions were needed. The desired weight distribution, for example, could only be achieved by moving the engine as far back as possible, which in turn gave rise to new production challenges.
The suspension consists of two-handle MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link axle at the rear. For the sake of handling precision in curves, the front subframe and the control arms are mounted on extremely stiff attachment points. The wishbone and swivel bearings are made of aluminum, which reduces the unsprung mass of the vehicle and contributes to agility and efficiency. Rear, the lightweight and high-strength subframe and its equally lightweight anchorages improve the precision of the wheel guidance. The Michelin Pilot Supersport tires mounted on the forged 19-inch alloy wheels are slightly wider at the rear than the front; The high-performance hubs have a higher camber and optimized kinematics. The electric power steering provides a sport and a comfort mode, while brakes on Brembo four-piston calipers grab.
An equipment package as well as an exclusive edition for the market launch
The new Toyota GR Supra in Europe will already be equipped with all the systems that enable the driver to exploit the full driving pleasure potential of the sports car. These include the active differential, the adaptive suspension and the 19-inch alloy wheels with high-performance brakes.

The infotainment system has ten speakers, a 8.8-inch display, Bluetooth, USB port and a navigation system.
The adaptive headlights, taillights and daytime running lights all work with LED technology, interior and exterior mirrors are automatically dimming. The sports seats are in the version Active with black Alcantara, heated and electrically adjustable (with memory function), and the lumbar support can be electrically adjusted.
The standard safety equipment includes the Safety + package with blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear-cross traffic alert, rear-end collision alert and intelligent parking sensors with automatic braking function. An alarm system and the emergency call system E-Call are also on board.
In addition, a premium package is offered, which includes a black leather interior, a JBL Premium sound system with twelve speakers, a head-up display and a wireless charging function for the smartphone. More details about equipment and prices will be announced soon.
