Sports car icon launches in 2019 in the NASCAR Xfinity series
The Toyota Supra returns to the racetrack: The global sports car icon will launch in 2019 in the US NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS). The fight for the championship starts on 16 February 2019 at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.
The rebirth of the Toyota Supra should not be without a motorsport commitment. Because already in the 1980s, the model athlete was extremely successful in various racing series in Japan and the United States. In the 1990s followed two launches at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
For the new edition, Toyota has worked intensively on the race car with its subsidiaries Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and Calty Design Research. Both companies have extensive NASCAR experience and have developed, among other things, the racing version of the Toyota Camry, which won the 2017 NASCAR premier class. The Supra was tuned to the NXS regulations.
"We at Calty and TRD are confident we've developed another racing car that can win races and championships. The fact that the Supra starts in the NASCAR shows how important this vehicle is for us. The Supra is a true title contender, "said David Wilson, president of TRD.
In the coming year Toyota starts for the first time with three different vehicles in the three NASCAR series: In addition to the Supra in the NXS occurs in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series remains the Camry; in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series the Tundra fights for victories.
