From the road to the racetrack: At the Geneva Motor Show (March 7 to 17, 2019) the Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept celebrates its world premiere. The study transforms the fifth model generation of the sports car icon into a powerful race car for the international GT4 series.
Even the production version of the two-seater brings all the ingredients to be successful in motorsport: a perfectly balanced suspension, as stiff as lightweight body, rear-wheel drive and a very low center of gravity. The combination of a short wheelbase and wide track in the ideal ratio of 1.55 ensures excellent stability and agility - and provides valuable benefits in a racing series where power-balance requirements (weight adjustment to engine performance) ensure balanced competition.
The concept car developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing is instantly recognizable as a supra: this way, the muscular shape is preserved, even though the study has increased in length and the height has been lowered again. A specially designed front diffuser and a large rear wing reduce air resistance and increase downforce. Both components are made of composite materials with natural fibers such as hemp and flax - instead of the usual carbon fiber material. 18-inch five-hole racing bikes replace the original alloy wheels.
On the other hand, the McPherson front suspension struts and the multi-link rear suspension, which have been supplemented with racing-compatible springs, shock absorbers and stabilizers, have remained. Powerful Brembo brakes provide the necessary deceleration even at higher speeds.
Under the bonnet of the GR Supra GT4 Concept works the 3.0-liter straight-six with twin-scroll turbocharger, whose power sends an automatic transmission to the rear wheels. A motorsport suitable control unit and tailor-made harnesses increase the performance, also drive shafts and limited slip differential have been optimized.
A high-strength roll cage and a fire extinguisher meet the FIA standards, controlled by the OMP racing seat. The concept vehicle is also equipped with a motorsport-specific fuel tank and quick refueling system.
The GT4 is one of the fastest growing racing series in the world, with national and regional competitions in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. Founded in 2006, it's an affordable series for professionals and amateurs who can use the GT4 as a springboard for higher-level contests like the GT3. Whether the Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept actually goes into production as an affordable racing car for private racers and teams depends on the interest of potential customers.
One step further is already the normal Supra: The limited A90 Edition, which was launched for the comeback of the sports car after 17 years of abstinence, is already sold out. The order books are also well filled for the regular version: almost 900 orders have been received for the new edition throughout Europe.
